SEA Europe, the Shipyards and Maritime Equipment Association, warmly welcomes the \u201cgreen light\u201d\u00a0given today by the European Parliament\u2019s International Committee (INTA) to the ratification of the EUCanada\u00a0Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
\nThe EU and Canada approved and signed CETA on 30 October 2016, following lengthy and intense\u00a0negotiations. The European Parliament and EU national Parliaments must approve CETA before it can\u00a0take full effect. CETA will make it easier to export goods and services, benefitting people and\u00a0businesses in both the EU and Canada.
\nSEA Europe Secretary General Christophe Tytgat said:\u00a0“CETA will have a significant positive impact for the European maritime technology industry and, thus,\u00a0contribute to enhancing its economic and strategic importance for Europe. CETA will indeed make it\u00a0more attractive for the European industry to export vessels and equipment to Canada, inter alia,\u00a0through the phasing\u2010out of 99% of all industrial tariffs. Furthermore, CETA will also have positive effects\u00a0for the employment in our industry\u201d.
\nBeside reducing regulatory costs as well as easing the certification procedures for the shipbuilding and\u00a0maritime equipment industry, CETA is also expected to open\u2010up the Canadian procurement clauses\u201d,\u00a0Mr. Tytgat added.
\n\u201cThe European maritime technology industry\u2019s market is a global one. Trade liberalization and market\u00a0opening through the conclusion of agreements, such as CETA, are key to ensuring the long\u2010term growth\u00a0and competitiveness of our industry. SEA Europe is delighted that the CETA ratification is heading in the\u00a0right direction and, following the consent expressed today by the INTA Committee, looks forward to a\u00a0positive vote by the Parliament\u2019s Plenary in mid\u2010February, Mr. Tytgat concluded.
